PPE or Personal Protective Equipment is worn to minimize exposure to hazards that can cause workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, biological, physical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. At the IGB laboratories, the minimal PPE requirements when actively working include safety glasses, lab coats, gloves, long pants that cover ankles, and shoes that fully enclose the entire foot.
Over the last few months, we found an increasing number of colleagues missing elements of the required PPE in the lab. To address this issue, we launched a PPE Campaign to provide our colleagues with a visual representation of JGI PPE requirements. When working in the lab, it is important that we follow these requirements and remind our colleagues to do the same. Check out our JGI trendsetters below to see examples of appropriate PPE, including appropriate footwear.
