The JGI’s Metabolomics Program works to uncover the roles of small molecules in biological systems, linking them with genomic data to enhance our understanding of genome science, organisms, and ecosystems at the molecular level. Integrating genomics with metabolomics fuels the discovery  of novel metabolites, genes, and proteins. It also enables exploration of energy and nutrient exchange, as well as microbial and plant responses to environmental changes. With advanced mass spectrometry techniques and computational tools, the program supports foundational research related to soil nutrient cycling and health, terrestrial biogeochemical processes, development of high performance plants and microbes, and understanding microbiome interactions. The  insights derived are crucial for advancing the bioeconomy, environmental sustainability, and improving bioenergy crops.
