Tiny Earth is a worldwide network of 600 instructors using inquiry-based discovery to teach concepts in biology to >10,000 undergraduate students per year. Tiny Earth in collaboration with JGI plans to sequence hundreds of genomes from antimicrobial-producing soil microbes and subsequently identify novel biosynthetic gene clusters. This research will provide invaluable data on the phylogenomics and geographical distribution of secondary metabolite production and hopefully lead to the development of a new bio-pesticide to protect energy and food crop health.
