“Adopt a Genome” is an informal program for faculty to “claim” the JGI’s unpublished microbial genomes, with the expectation that faculty will work with undergraduates in the analysis and publication of the claimed genome sequences. This opportunity, provided by the Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute, builds upon thousands of microbial genomes that have been sequenced by the JGI though not formally analyzed or published.

The purpose of the program is to:
  • Build curiosity and illustrate the value of comparative genomic analysis
  • Expose students to peer review process, conveys responsibility and accountability
  • Promote utilization of JGI products and services while nurturing a fresh cohort of users
  • Reach the next generation of genome scientists and recruit new talent for biosciences.
Adopt-a-Genome has:
  • 11 CSU educators working with the JGI
  • 120 genomes claimed (or about one per student)
  • Seven student-drafted articles accepted with over 20 more in draft
  • Efforts in ongoing curriculum development and adoption of classroom modules
Testimonials:

"A lot of our students are working 20, 30, 40 hours a week outside of school. They can't commit 8, 10, 20 hours a week in the research lab, but they can commit to a semester of some computational analysis. So they're getting research experience "light" and... they're getting a publication at the end."

— Professor Matt Escobar,  CSU San Marcos

"This was our first paper. It was definitely interesting going through the whole process of submitting, getting feedback, and all the rules and protocols that go along with submitting a paper. That was something that we have just never learned before".
