Data Systems Engagement Lead

Since 2018, Mr. Wilson has served as the Systems Engineering Group lead. The group is responsible for developing and supporting applications that span the lifecycle of activities at JGI - proposal submission and review, project and work order creation and management, automated sequence quality control and automation of microbial/metagenomic assemblies, portals that make data available to the public, and our institutional website. Mr. Wilson brings a user-centered approach, an ability to work with others to break down complex issues into achievable tasks, and an ability to get teams to align and reach the associated goals.

Mr. Wilson joined the JGI in 2002. After supporting the sequencing core at Exelixis Biopharmaceuticals as an intern, he joined the JGI as an Instrumentation Engineer where he added structure and process to the group by developing SOPs for instrument maintenance and operation. Pursuing an interest in coordinating teams and project management, he worked with the Informatics Department to develop software that pushed instrument run information directly into the database rather than depending upon error prone, manual input by the users in a web browser interface. Mr. Wilson then served as Project Manager for the planning and implementation of JGI’s Integrated Tracking System (ITS) and served as the Shared Components Team Lead Data Warehouse and Software Quality Assurance teams from April 2012 to 2018.
