Technology Implementation Lead

Dr. Baumgart joined the DOE Joint Genome Institute in 2018, following his doctoral research in synthetic biology and microfluidics at the University of California, San Diego. As the Sequencing Technology Implementation Lead, he directs a multidisciplinary team responsible for piloting and operationalizing new genomic technologies, integrating automated liquid handling and bioinformatics pipelines to transition bench-scale methods into production workflows. He developed and scaled the multiDAP-seq assay, a method that enables high-throughput characterization of transcription factor binding sites and which has been applied to a wide range of JGI user science projects spanning bacteria, fungi, and plants. His team is also developing single-nuclei sequencing methods to characterize gene regulation at the level of individual cells across diverse plant tissues. Dr. Baumgart focuses on expanding functional genomics capabilities through process automation and method development.
