The research team for the project spenned 18 different institutions, including the Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. The soybean sequencing was the institute’s largest plant project so far, and is also the largest plant that has ever been sequenced using a technique called “the whole genome shotgun strategy.”Jeremy Schmutz, first author of the paper and an institute scientist at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Alabama, said the whole genome shotgun strategy is “where we break it apart and reassemble it like a huge puzzle.”
