Green algae evolved, colonized and dramatically changed our planet. Within their genetic code is a hidden blueprint that may inspire ways to solve future global problems and to restore our ecosystems affected by the Anthropocene climate crisis. However, genomics research on unicellular green algae is far from having reached its full potential. There is currently a significant bias in sequenced representatives that hampers our understanding of their diversity as well as their role in the environment. Here, we propose to fill this gap by sequencing genomes from underrepresented green algae groups.
